Retro Review: Tetris (Gameboy)

Simplicity perfected in the form of a Russian Puzzle Game.

Tetris is a simple yet iconic game that is regarded around the world as a classic that every Nintendo fan should enjoy at least once-unfortunately for us Nintendo fans, we have played this game more then once...more then twice..more then 200 times. Why? Well, the first major reason is that Tetris came packed in the box with the Nintendo Gameboy, a console that genesis-ed the mobile game market.

So, games that come packaged with Nintendo Consoles typically are the bees knees (Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, Wii Sports) but that aside, lets look at the game play.

You stack bricks to create lines. The bricks are made of 4 squares. There are long pieces, there are awkward pieces. Gameplay

Graphics. Bad, but good for the time. Basically every game for the og Gameboy looks pretty sour in comparison to Nintendo's latest handheld. But, for the time (I imagine) the portable game industry was just flowering and honestly, the ability to play the game on the go was enough to carry it. And after, does it matter how good the game looks when you are making lines with bricks.

Music. Music is something I honestly hate writing about because I feel it is the most suggestive thing about any media production. That being said, I love the music. I love the Russian inspired melodies that play during the game and in fact, I think that the music helps make the game play more enjoyable. It adds to the simple game play by giving it a little bit of a sense of theme that this type of game desperately needs.

Final Verdict. This game holds up over time, it is one of the granddaddy's of Puzzle Gaming and is (in my opinion) the least gimmicky of the franchise because the game is a Pure Puzzler. I give this game a 10/10. Modern puzzlers do not transcend to this perfection.

This is the NES/GameBoy feature Part 1!
//The text in this "article" is purely flavour text

Tetris (NES/GameBoy)

Simple Shapes, Simple Gameplay, Simple Colours-Simply Amazing Sounds. This game is known far and wide for being the simple and addictive piece of 8 bit beauty that it is. Everything about this game is as basic as it comes (yes, even more basic then Miley), save the outstanding soundtrack.

Clash at Demonhead (NES)

Whale, I am going to catch AAAALLLL kinds of shit for this one. This game has loops, good loops.. Thats all, loops. In my opinion, amazing loops. Loops that I never get tired of. Loops that some people (lots of people) hate. Loops that I love and that’s why they are a part of this list of great soundtracks.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)

This legendary arcade port is normally highly ranked for the game play and is never forgotten on lists for best NES Soundtracks. Honestly, who does not love this soundtrack?? That is all, there is nothing more to say.

Bubble Bobble (NES)

Bubble Bobble is one of those arcade-style-classic-pure-fun-can't-be-emulated-no-matter-how-hard- developers-try kind of games. It has some pretty snazzy chip tunes to go along with it.

***OBLIGATORY GAME ALERT***

Pokemon Red/Blue (Gameboy)

10/10 best game. 10/10 Best Music. But in all honestly, Pokemon's game has set a standard of really immersive music that fits every route, boss, and faithful encounter perfectly.

Am I Buzzfeed yet?
