Comic Reviews: MPH #1

A comic by the guy who wrote Kick Ass (Mark Millar)? Where do I sign up??

I took a trip to local Comic Shop “Downtown Comics” yesterday and asked the lady at the front desk, recommend me some number ones to read. Well lady at the front desk who’s name I don’t know...THANKS!

MPH is a comic that I have been describing to the layman as a bastardized version of DC’s Flash Comic. By bastardized, I don’t mean stripped down..I mean you took Flash and turned him into a bad guy, a bastard. Hey..works for me.

MPH , from what I can gather from issue #1, there is a group, however few, that can move incredibly fast. So fast in fact that they can leave a burning trail behind them that can carve a large trail out of the state of Missouri.

Then we meet the protagonist, at first a lovable dreamer criminal who abruptly gets put in jail after one of his running mates deals all of the blame his direction so he can “screw his girl”. Right. Well, after getting in prison this is where he encounters the MPH drug and then badda bing badda boom he can run fast ‘n shit.

Now, I realize that earlier I said “Superhuman” and more recently I said “MPH drug and then badda bing badda boom he can run fast ‘n shit”, but that’s how the comic said it works in that particular chronological order.

Overall I enjoyed issue #1, the art style is fantastic and edgy and the story drives me to want to read more.

Comic Reviews: Rocket Raccoon #3

Rocket Raccoon Issue #3 came out approximately 6 days ago and yeah, i’m late...sue me. Rocket Raccoon thus far has been acute little series that I look forward to buying for every month but this issue has me feeling lukewarm at best.

Spoilers*

So in short summary, this issue of Rocket Raccoon features an “epic” battle against the princesses that have spite against him...the problem is, this battle is anything but epic. The comic spent up all of its proverbial foreshadowing points the last couple of issues on building up this princess battle that was teased on the last page or two of Rocket Raccoon #2..and we were robbed of the fight. The fight lasts four pages and the “heroic” party warps away in Star Wars style and that ends it. So, for me as far as the action in concerned I was disappointed.

The one thing this issue does do however is keep up the humor and attitude. Rocket Raccoon always has an edginess and wit to him and in the previously mentioned warp away from trouble, the comic payed a little homage to Star Wars that I found hilarious. Another comedic element that I enjoy is Groot. It is hilarious to insert your own words and have a mini conversation between Rocket Raccoon. For example. Groot will say “I am Groot” and Rocket Raccoon responds, “Well I’m sorry, she was just a fresh young sapling! She’ll get over it!” Brilliant. (By the way, I made that dialogue up..Marvel where ya at!”

This issue is plot heavy and that is a positive. I haven’t seen a plot heavy issue of Rocket Raccoon yet and this is why I feel lukewarm about it. Rocket Raccoon has been fast paced and action packed and although there are fight scenes, they are very predictable. Rocket Raccoon is colder than ice. He always wins, until maybe some unforeseen thing that happened at the end that I will refrain from spoiling given the amount of spoilers.
Pick Up Rocket Raccoon at your local Comic Book Store or on Marvel.com

Comic Reviews: Rocket Raccoon Issue #2

This comic. Just wow.

Recently, I have finally came into having enough means to do things that I've always wanted to do. Things, like purchasing comic books. The first western comic book I ever purchased was Rocket Raccoon Issue #1

But as fantastic as that was, we are here to talk about its successor A Chasing Tale Part 2.

A quick synopsis for those of us who don't know. This special 4 part special comic follows "Guardians of the Galaxy" character Rocket Raccoon. He's the last of his race, saviour of princesses and one feisty motherf*cker. He's a total badass but he's in trouble (what would the story be if he wasn't). Rocket Is the last of his race as he mentions many a time and now there is another! Another raccoon, this wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that this new raccoon is murdering people.

This is a pretty classic tail where the proud, super ego, loner badass finds himself in trouble do to a condition that he found pride in and I love it.

The story continues this issue with a pseudo-serious interrogation, a prison break and a whole lot of "I AM GROOT"

On a side note the issue also features a sneak peak of "Moon Knight". Never heard of it? Me either, but it has my money.

Stills captured from my personal copy
