As of late Kickstarter has helped bring us the games we want but other wise would not get due to lack of funding and or publisher support. Due to the huge success of kickstarter campaigns for games like Double Fine Adventure, Project Eternity and Wasteland 2 Shenmue project director Yu Suzuki has been fairly interested in doing the same for Shenmue 3 according to French reporter Sebastien-Abdelhamid's twitter.
Yu Suzuki déclare penser au Crownfunding type Kickstarter pour financer Shenmue 3 !#MAGS

But note Suzuki also stated that he is also interested in doing a anime and or manga to complete the Shenmue story line. Also the past two games in the Shenmue series have had budgets well over $50 million, and the most funded project on Kickstarter Pebble hit a little over $10 million. So would Shenmue be able to crowd source that kind of money? Is an anime or manga the best bet? At this point I will take what I can get even though a third installment would be nice. But in any case Suzuki needs to obtain rights from SEGA before he can move forward.
