Zero Dark Thirty tells the story of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The story is told by chronicling a part of the career of a C.I.A agent named Maya (last name never mentioned and probably not even a real name). This movie is listed in many places as an action, dram, historical film. However I don't want any of our readers to be fooled. This is not an ACTION movie and any one who goes into a theater believing so will leave the theater terribly disappointed. Going into this movie I thought it was going to be like the Titanic. You might ask : Why the Titanic? I say the titanic because in The Titanic there's no surprise we all know the bout sinks. Same with Zero Dark Thirty, we all know they catch the guy. However Zero Dark Thirty proved to have it's twist and turns. It had plenty of unexpected events and moments, but overall it doesn't truly fit into any genre.
The movie begins with a black screen playing a montage of sounds, sounds of 9/11 related phone calls. The sounds suddenly stop and there is a short moment of silence before the screen finally fades into a torture chamber in an undisclosed location. We see a man named Amman standing on a cushion surrounded by a group of men wearing ski mask. In comes Dan the only person in the room other than Amman who isn't masked. Dan says a few words to Amman to convince him that he is completely helpless. He then leaves as the group of masked men string his arms up to the ceiling. Outside Maya, our protagonist takes her mask and Dan's comments reveal that this is her first interrogation. They then go back inside and Dan begins a more intense interrogation. He then water boards Amman and ask him a flurry of questions ending with the question" When was the last time you saw Bin Laden!?"
If you haven't heard yet, this movie has just been nominated for a few of Oscars, five of them in fact. It's so like the Oscars to appreciate good acting and good directing yet forget the most important part of the movie,THE STORY. For those of you who see it, I want you to ask yourself a simple question. If this movie was not based on a true event would it still be as interested in it. The answer will probably be no. At certain points of the movie we're hit with shock and awe. However that the entire movie can be best described as bland and informational. Mostly informational, Zero Dark Thirty sheds light on many aspects on the hunt for Bin Laden that I'm sure many people didn't know about. The most intriguing part had to be the end where they raided Bin Laden's compound (I want to say spoilers* but I can't do it without feeling like a jackass since we all know how the movie ends.)
